Jose Arriola Villafuerte
About
Jose is a first-year medical student at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. Born and raised in Peru, he studied one year of medical school at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia. Eventually, he moved to Canada to pursue his undergraduate BS.c. in Neuroscience at the University of Toronto. As an undergraduate, Jose spent most of his time doing research. He worked for Dr. dos Santos in a Canadian-Brazilian joint research project to determine neuroimmune regulation of pulmonary innate immune responses post-stroke. He also used his time in Canada to advocate for the Latinx community. He founded and led the Spanish Student Organization, the only Hispanic community at the University of Toronto Scarborough. Now, he is putting most of his time as the president of Covid Networks Peru, an NGO that aims to help senior citizens of his home country who have been impacted by the COVID pandemic. Talk to Jose if you have questions about being a pre-med in Canada, applying to medical school during COVID, and learning Spanish!
