A Message from our Founders: How we started
From Azan Virji
"I always knew I wanted to be a physician. But time and time again, I was told to forgo that dream.
When I first arrived to the US, the statistics showed that the number of international students at US medical schools was very low. I was encouraged to pursue other career options in college to avoid the heartbreak of not being accepted to medical schools in the US.
But I was not ready to give up just yet. I was fortunate enough to find a senior in college who also had a similar dream. He met me one afternoon on a Sunday at a coffee shop and helped me plan my four years at college. This breakdown made me feel like being pre-med was a manageable and achievable goal. Even though I did not quite stick to that schedule, meeting with someone made me feel at ease about the whole process.
F-1 Doctors was started for three reasons: One is to improve the visibility around international students in US medical schools, dental schools, and residencies. Second is to build a network of international healthcare professionals. And third, most importantly, is to allow for internationals interested in the healthcare field to find mentors who can guide them through the application process.
Many of the mentors at F-1 Doctors are in medical school, dental school or residency right now thanks to the generosity and mentorship of others. This is our way of paying it forward. We hope that you will find the advice that you need to excel in the application process as an international applicant."
